Interactive Games on the Net

No 1
: BioGame @ Globbarit
This game, though on the surface seems shallow and simple, actually embodies the fact of how globalisation can destroy our planet, through the loss of nature and natural resources, as well as the eventual forging of a common identity for Man, which in the game, eventually destroys the world.

No 2: The Commodities Game @ ActiveHistory
This game is for the year 9s in the UK, however i find that this game is also somewhat relevant to globalisation, in the sense of world trade and commerce, and one has to have a sense of business acumen and a dose of common sense to score well in the game.

No 3
: Sim Sweatshop @ NOW
This game is
ANNOYING, as the days in the game are very short. You have to STARE at the stop clock on the bottom left corner of the screen, and not to mention you're making shoes for a meagre sum of money that may be docked if you don't complete your work. The game requires good hand eye coordination, accuracy in placing the pieces, and of course, watching the time and energy bar. This game is a simulation of the poor and unfair conditions that factory workers in sweatshops are facing, the sweatshops being a by product of globalisation.

{
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, this game is FUN!, though ANNOYING.}

What has globalization brought to us?
Please take a look at the video clip below(economics).

Globalization is the integration of cultures, economics, government policies and political movement worldwide.
Global expansion brings new cultures to countries, economic growth to the companies home country as well as the new locations.
Besides that, globalization leads to dehumanizing labour, mistreat of workers, running out of non-renewable resources, various kinds of pollutions and culture extinctions
Nations divided become united. East becomes West. North becomes South. Economics thrive by trade and cultures becomes appreciated.
Overall, the negative consequences of globalization is outweighing its positive outcomes.
Should we continue pretending blind and carry on this practice?

Globalisation of Technology

What is to be done, O Moslems? For I do not recognise myself.
I am neither Christian, nor Jew, nor Gabr, nor Moslem.
I am not of the East, nor of the West, nor of the land, nor of the sea;
I am not of Nature’s mint, nor of the circling heaven.
I am not of earth, nor of water, nor of air, nor of fire;
I am not of the empyrean, nor of the dust, nor of existence, nor of entity.
I am not of India, nor of China, nor of Bulgaria, nor of Saqsin.
I am not of the kingdom of ’Iraqian, nor of the country of Khorasan
I am not of this world, nor of the next, nor of Paradise, nor of Hell.
I am not of Adam, nor of Eve, nor of Eden and Rizwan.
My place is the Placeless; my trace is the Traceless;
’Tis neither body nor soul, for I belong to the soul of the Beloved.
I have put duality away; I have seen that the two worlds are one;
One I seek, One I know, One I see, One I call.
He is the first, He is the last, He is the outward, He is the inward;
I am intoxicated with Love’s cup, the two worlds have passed out of my ken;
If once in my life I spent a moment without thee,
From that time and from that hour I repent of my life.
If once in this world I win a moment with thee,
I will trample on both worlds; I will dance in triumph for ever.
- Rumi

As seen from this poem, technology pertaining to communication and also the growth and expansionist natures of MNCs have allowed for people all over the world to find similar or even identical products in all other countries, for example Microsoft, even though it might be in various languages, the software is installed in every desktop, laptop, or even PDA phones in the world! Other global brands like Apple, Compaq, Sony, Panasonic, Canon are also famous for various technological gadgets, said gadgets being iPod, laptops, mobile phones, plasma televisions, and digital cameras respectively. Included at the bottom is a collage of various global brands and their famous products. See if you can identify them all!

Collage of global technological brands
PS: If you want to find out the brands, just go to the links to the images at the bottom, they are arranged in order by rows, from left to right. HAVE FUN! :D

Apple's iPod and iPhone have especially created an impact in the ever changing trends, people all over the world buying and utilising iPods, as Apple's packaging of the product has been superb, since they have succeeded in advertising the product in such a way that both the old and young are suitable to use it. And Canon's digital cameras need not be elaborated on, most families would own a digital camera, the most common brand being canon, due to its well designed advertisements and the ever improving quality and design of the camera as fashion trends change over time.

Thus, technology has connected the world and brought majority of the people closer to each other, however there is still the existence of the small minority that are suffering away in order to satisfy the demands of goods and products coming from the majority of the population, and these people are those working in the manufactoring companies placed in various countries all over the world, where they may be working under unfair conditions with a meagre pay that is hardly enough to sustain their family. Multi-national companies with overseas factories are generally known as ‘Sweatshops’, where workers are given little pay and work long hours, or are forced into labouring at the factories. As such, a code of conduct has been suggested for Sweatshops.

The terms include:
1. No use of forced labour
2. Freedom of association
3. Payment of a wage enough to sustain a living
4. Provision of safe working conditions for the factory labourers
5. Eradication of child labour
6. No discrimination against any people of appropriate age, race, colour, religion or gender
7. Allow independent monitoring by other external sources that the code is being adhered to.

there is a video clip on the issue of defending globalisation(politics).

sis coming to us. People in the world are behaving more and more similar. You can find people drink Coke cola and eat McDonald in Beijing, in Tokyo, in Singapore, in London or somewhere south Africa just as same as American do in New York. However, is it really good and beneficial for all? Or is it just a method that first worlders use to occupy the third worlders? when u look at a map, all the nations just spread out in front of u, but it does not mean they are equal. The globalisation is just a process that the cultures and traditions of the powerful state spread out to the relatively weaker states. It is not fair. American allow others to follow them for their own convenience. On the other side, the poor are losing their own cultures and identities. Just as it says, fish can't see the water, it is not easy for people to realise the negative effect of globalisation.

Globalisation of Culture AND COKE

This is a Coca Cola commercial.

Coca Cola is indisputably one of the most common drinks in the world. In almost any country at all, Coca Cola can be found. For example, India, China, America and France. Coke is now THE DRINK.

Picture this

In Japan, instead of drinking japanese green tea, people drink coke.

In Britain, instead of drinking english tea, people drink coke.

In Singapore, instead of drinking black coffee to wake up, people drink coke.

Globalisation of culture is in act here. Their various cultures are slowly changing due to globalisation and cultures are slowing losing out.

Globalisation of Culture

Thunderstorm
Undaunted descent from the heavens above
the barrage of raindrops, bullets of water
an army of rain, relentless in their pursuit
militant crusaders leading the revolution downward
in the darkness of the night
long after twilight
Mere hours till daylight

With each impact a subtle change runs through tradition's veins
triggering electrical impulses that navigate themselves through its nerves
just as the lightning that cracks across the skies
briefly illuminating the night with each magnificent burst of electricity
each respectively flashing upon my eyes.
The quiet and calm waters of tradition
Rippling with each falling drop rain
Bringing about times of change
Pupil dilated in disguise.

Thereafter ensues the stimulation of another sense
as the lightning fades, and the rain pounds ever persistently
there comes a sound like no other to meet the ears, as the thunder
with it's mighty force, proceeds in striking through to the bone
a feeling felt deep within, as the body becomes one with the storm
Together taking one form

The formation of a new macworld,
Walking out of Starbucks and holding a warm cup of frappe
Standing in this downpour of rain that soothingly massages our skin with each cold drop
Together we are surrounded in this meteorological bliss, sealing the moment with each simple comfort and bliss, a time not to be lost, and a global culture not to be forgotten.
Without desire there can be no satisfaction.

Afterword:
This poem was written by me, and in this poem I used rain as a substitute to the far reaching fingers and influence(look at the left picture on the top and you get a feeling of what i mean by fingers, in the sense of the lightning bolt) of globalisation that are taking place slowly yet surely, like little raindrops being collected in a bucket, slowly accumulating, slowly increasing, drop by drop. The second stanza was written to compare the effects of tradition versus the changing landscape of modernity, and the globalisation of culture. Then comes the thunder and lightning, changing the landscape and perceptions of the masses, entrenching and supporting the positive view of the globalisation, causing it to become the common view. The last stanza embodies globalisation taking over the world by storm(pun intended!), and as Man begins to embrace globalisation even though they were against it as first; as it is an inevitable change that cannot be avoided, and a change that will not fade easily. I quote the last line of my poem 'without desire there can be no satisfaction'.

McDonalds is almost in every country, as is KFC and Burger King, though they are less popularly known. Another famous food and beverage outlet is Starbucks, its outlets even expanding to include the Forbidden City in Beijing, and many other smaller and seemingly less significant countries.

(some sums and figures)
(Starbucks in Beijing)

"...Starbucks is turning into a sandwich chain - and courting decaffeinated consciences with fair-trade coffee...while McDonalds sees profits plunge and franchisees jump format…”

(Starbucks is EVERYWHERE!)

In 2003 BBC had a TV series called ‘Beef burgers, Blockbusters and Blue Jeans’. The focus of the episodes were on the ‘Americanisation of global culture’, as the host ‘explored the effect of McDonalds and other American icons and companies’.

Thus, globalisation has connected the world and brought majority of the people closer to each other, however there is still the existence of the small minority that are suffering away in order to satisfy the demands of goods and produce coming from the majority of the population, especially products like toys, of which 70% are made in China.

Globalisation of Politics

Animal rights, human rights, homosexual rights, children’s right – one of the many reason and causes of the globalization of politics. But amidst all these campaigns going on worldwide today, there is a shadow of globalization, The Globalization of Political Violence. The events of the 11th of September 2001 revealed most dramatically that globalization has a shadow. While large sections of the world’s population enjoy the perceived benefits of globalization, others seek to utilize globalization for their own politically violent purposes. If 9/11 demonstrated anything, it is that globalization can as readily facilitate violence and insecurity as it can produce stability, prosperity and political order. Since the end of the cold war and the dismantling of the Berlin wall, we have witnessed the emergence of something that could be called political globalization. The cold war can be regarded as the last great global clash between the nation states of the USSR and the USA. The end of this cold war marked the end of an era when the ultimate threat of war between states determined international relations. We have entered new territory - and are past the old paradigm of war between nations. September 11, 2001 demonstrated only too graphically that we live in an interdependent world, where a superpower like the US cannot maintain security merely through the protection of its borders, and where nation states like Lebanon can no longer control what happens within their borders.

Globalisation of Technology

Hi! I am the iphone. I represent the most advanced and latest telecommunication technology up to date. I was released in the United States on 29th June 2007. As Americans queue up to get me at Apple stores, people all around the world wait for the release of me in their respective countries! Some even come from afar to the States so as to get their hands on me. I represent the latest technology which is wanted all around the world. The Asians can’t wait to get their hands on me but they will have to wait a year. In no time, everyone around the whole world will be using me, therefore I am a globalised technology. Mr Steve Jobs, the owner of my creator company is very proud of me as sales have been impressive the minute I was released all around the world. Mr Steve Jobs says I have been the most impressive, overtaking sales of my brothers and cousins that include the Ipod nano, Imac computer and the ipod video. He believes the goal of introducing me to the entire world is on course to be fulfilled. It is almost everyone’s dream to have me in their pockets, assisting them in their daily lives.

LG KE850
SAMSUNG F700 Ultra Slim Phone

Competitors have come in many variations including my arch enemies, the Samsung F700 ultra slim phone and the LG KE850. Other companies have tried to make phones similar to me to challenge in the market as they want to match up to my impressive introduction to this global technological market.

I am the iphone. I am here there everywhere. Just walk down a street you will see a couple of me, and in the few months down the road, I will probably be in your pocket.

Globalisation of China's Culture
McDonald's: a commonality in China

Starbucks Coffee: many branches including one in the Forbidden City
Three Gorges Dam

Globalisation of China's culture

When one take a walk along China’s famous Yangzi River, towns are being deconstructed.
They are being relocated to higher ground so as to accommodate the Three Gorges Dam. Lives are broken apart and put back together higher up the river. This is just a small section of China which is in transition. In fact, many parts of China are going through the same process. A modern China is being built up, a globalised China. As the Three Gorges Dam is built up, history is lost; culture is lost in place of modernization, development and advancement.

Duck intestine, fish skin, fried fritters and Peking duck are just some of the wide variety of Chinese delicacies. Yet today, KFC, McDonalds and Pizza hut fill every corner of the streets. Western has become the new culture. The people in China pay higher prices for Western food, watch western movies, and wear westernized clothing. They view anything from the West as “cool” and fashionable and try to follow their trends.

China, like the rest of the world, faces the challenge to retain its own cultural identity and national characteristics despite the homogenizing tendencies of globalization.

Globalisation of Economy

Does this seem familiar to you?
Have you seen this replicated in many ways, on television dramas, in commercials, or even in movies?
Or has this personally happened to you?

Globalisation has allowed economy of many countries to flourish, allowing better living conditions and better lives for many civilians. Indeed, countries like China and even Singapore has benefited from Globalisation. People are no longer restricted to work in their own countries for an income. Globalisation of Economy has allowed many people from around the world to have the chance to work outside of their countries. However, the world has revolved due to globalisation and a dog-eat-dog kind of society emerged. Like this man in the cartoon here, many people around the world have lost their job to a better worker who is willing to be paid lower. Problems like getting retrenched and losing jobs and statuses overnight appeared. The effect of globalisation of economy has affected most people around the world, in a good and bad way.

Globalisation of Technology

Technologic: sung by Daft Punk
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it,

Trash it, change it, mail - upgrade it,

Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it,

Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,

Write it, cut it, paste it, save it,

Load it, check it, quick - rewrite it,

Plug it, play it, burn it, rip it,

Drag and drop it, zip - unzip it,

Lock it, fill it, call it, find it,

View it, code it, jam - unlock it,

Surf it, scroll it, pause it, click it,

Cross it, crack it, switch - update it,

Name it, rate it, tune it, print it,

Scan it, send it, fax - rename it,

Touch it, bring it, Pay it, watch it,

Turn it, leave it, start - format it.

Technologic

Without a doubt, the World runs on technology today. From the pilots flying their sophisticated aeroplanes to the electronic graphic calculators in our classrooms, the World has indeed evolved. Technology plays an important role in contemporary globalization. Inventions such as computers and the Personal Developer Assistance (PDA) have made our lives more convenient, just with a button you could access to almost anything you need, even shopping online has become a trend for us. Now schools implement new leaning enrichment programs for us such us electronic learning week, whereby we could all no go to school but at the same time do our work via online at home. Its amazing what technology can do to globalize our nation allowing us to interact and integrate among the people, companies, and governments of different nations. Technology can be described as above - TECHNOLOGIC.

This is the new culture

Every place on every street
Same music and news all in a fleet
People singing the same old songs
A global anthem where everyone belongs
OC, Heroes, Lost & Prison Break
Playing all over the world without a break
It’s the same culture, same exposure, same everything
Even the tunes of Coldplay and Linkin Park ring
No more the tunes of Chan Mali Chan,
Not even the good old Hokkien rant
No more traditional Hindi dances on air
Just more Simpsons and ads on hair
No more traditional board games
Only Brad Pitt or Ronaldo photo frames

This is the new culture
The global culture
Where everyone sings to the same tunes
Where tradition is in ruins
Where everyone watch the same things
And wear the same rings

The TV something small but how it relieves
The tool that shapes lives
It is a juggernaut changing the way we learn
The way we live, the way we are
One flick of the control
Our lives at its control
Changing our opinions
Changing our values
Changing our lives
Good or bad?
You decide.

This is the new culture
The global culture
Where everyone sings to the same tunes
Where tradition is in ruins
Where everyone watch the same things
And wear the same rings

Thoughts:
Today in the world, there is a new global culture. The whole wide world is wired and plugged into the TV programmes, movies, news, music, lifestyles and entertainment of the West. Satellite cables, phones, walkmans, VCDs, DVDs and retail giants and other marvels and wonders of entertainment technology are creating the mass marketing of culture. All over the world people of all ages are exposed to the same music from Coldplay, Linkin part, the same news, sitcoms like F.R.I.E.N.D.S, drama series like “Heroes” and “The OC” and the same glamorous lifestyle.
Young people the world over aspire for the kind of adult relationships found in ‘Friends’. The penetration of global music has resulted in the marginalisation of traditional music among cultures the world over. Today, pop music and its local variations can be heard in all social settings from weddings to religious festivals and birthday celebrations. Young people have lost touch with traditional harmonies and traditional tunes are no longer heard. Even in Singapore, only the older generations listen to songs in Hokkien, Cantonese and other dialects. The young people only listen to the likes of Jason Mraz and Usher.

This is the new culture, the global culture which has everyone do the same things. Everyone all around the world, sing and listen to the same songs, watch the same shows and movies, read the same news and even eat the same food.
The TV is another tool which is largely involved in the globalization of culture. It has become an immovable juggernaut. It shapes lifestyles and values and fills the vacuum emptied by the pervasive collapse of traditional institutions, communities, clans, family, life, and authority.

This global culture is a reality, good or bad? You decide.
